⭐ Why You Are Going To Love These Bagels
Warm homemade taste. This blueberry bagel recipe is the perfect breakfast dish for those who want a warm, homemade taste with minimal effort.
It only requires a few simple ingredients—warm water, active dry yeast, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, salt and frozen blueberries – making it an economical and easy recipe
This recipe is great for 1 to 2 people and it can easily be doubled or tripled to make a larger batch.
🥘 Ingredients
- Active dry yeast helps the dough to rise and gives the bagels their fluffy texture. The yeast also creates a savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the sweet blueberries, making for an unbeatable combination. Do not use a rapid-rise yeast for these bagels.
- Unbleached all-purpose flour is a key to creating perfect air fryer bagels. This type of flour is made of wheat that has not been bleached, which gives it a natural yellowish hue and more nutrients than regular white all-purpose flour. Unbleached flour is also higher in proteins and starches, making it an ideal choice for baking as it can help create a lighter, fluffier final product.
- Frozen blueberries add a lovely hint of sweetness and bright color and also offer many nutritional benefits. Frozen blueberries contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can help promote heart health and reduce inflammation.
Exact measurements of all ingredients are in the full recipe at the bottom of this post.
🔪 How To
- Begin by combining warm water and yeast in a large bowl. Slowly add in granulated sugar and stir until it is fully dissolved.
- Add the dry ingredients, mixing until combined and a ball forms.
- Knead the dough for 5 minutes and form into a ball. Place in a greased bowl, cover and let it proof in a warm place for 1 hour.
- After resting, the bagel dough will be doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into 8 small balls and place them on a floured work surface. Shape balls into a bagel shape. Cover and rest 25 minutes.
- Once the dough is finished proofing, carefully dunk bagels, one at a time, into a boiling water bath for 3 minutes each.
- Using a strainer, remove the bagel from the boiling water bath.
- Transfer the boiled bagel to a parchment-lined air fryer basket. You will be able to fit 2 in the air fryer per batch.
- After 10 minutes of air frying, turning once, the bagels should be a rich golden brown. If not, add a couple minutes more cooking time.
- Transfer the warm bagels to a serving basket lined with a festive napkin. Use that same napkin to cover the bagels to keep them warm.
💭 Cook's Tips
- Don't skip the step for dunking the bagels in boiling water. This step sets up the crust and give these bagels their nice, chewy crust and dense interior.
- Make sure to use warm water, about 100 degrees Fahrenheit, for the dough and allow it to rise for at least 1 hour in a warm place for soft, fluffy bagels.
- While kneading, add just enough flour until the dough becomes smooth and no longer sticks to your hands.
- Do not over-knead the bread.
🧂 Substitutions
- Omit the blueberries for deliciously simple plain bagels.
- In place of the blueberries, you can use frozen cranberries. You can also use dried cranberries, raisins, apricots, or figs if you prefer. For dried fruits, cut them into small pieces. Then cover them with warm water for at least 15 minutes to rehydrate them before adding them to the dough.
- Add a dash of cinnamon and 1 cup of raisins, and omit the blueberries, for a delightful cinnamon raisin bagels.
📖 Variations
- For savory onion bagels, sprinkle the uncooked bagels with dried onion flakes.
- To mimic your favorite sesame bagels, sprinkle the uncooked bagels with sesame seeds.
- Make poppy seed bagels, by sprinkling poppy seeds over the uncooked bagels.
- Sprinkle the uncooked bagels with everything bagel seasoning when you place them in the air fryer basket. Or Everything but the Bagel seasoning from Trader Joe's.
- Make pizza bagel bites by adding shredded mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce, then air fry a couple of minutes or until the cheese is melted.
- Make mini bagels by dividing your dough into 8 sections. You should be able to fit 4 mini-bagels in a basket style air fryer. I suggest dropping your cooking time to 10-12 minutes and check the bagels to see if they are done.
Oven Method
You can also make these homemade bagels in the oven. Add the uncooked bagels to a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake at 400°F for 15 to 17 minutes, or until golden brown.
🥡Storage
Once cooled, air fryer bagels can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
If you need to store them for a longer period of time, it is best to keep them in the refrigerator or freezer.
To freeze them, place the cooled bagels in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1 to 2 hours. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.
When you are ready to eat the bagels, thaw out a frozen bagel overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature before reheating them it the air fryer.
