🥘 Ingredients

ingredients for air fryer bagels including flour, sugar, salt, frozen blueberries and yeast
  • Active dry yeast helps the dough to rise and gives the bagels their fluffy texture. The yeast also creates a savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the sweet blueberries, making for an unbeatable combination. Do not use a rapid-rise yeast for these bagels.
  • Unbleached all-purpose flour is a key to creating perfect air fryer bagels. This type of flour is made of wheat that has not been bleached, which gives it a natural yellowish hue and more nutrients than regular white all-purpose flour. Unbleached flour is also higher in proteins and starches, making it an ideal choice for baking as it can help create a lighter, fluffier final product.
  • Frozen blueberries add a lovely hint of sweetness and bright color and also offer many nutritional benefits. Frozen blueberries contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can help promote heart health and reduce inflammation.

💭 Cook’s Tips

  • Don’t skip the step for dunking the bagels in boiling water. This step sets up the crust and give these bagels their nice, chewy crust and dense interior.
  • Make sure to use warm water, about 100 degrees Fahrenheit, for the dough and allow it to rise for at least 1 hour in a warm place for soft, fluffy bagels.
  • While kneading, add just enough flour until the dough becomes smooth and no longer sticks to your hands.
  • Do not over-knead the bread.

🧂 Substitutions

  • Omit the blueberries for deliciously simple plain bagels.
  • In place of the blueberries, you can use frozen cranberries. You can also use dried cranberries, raisins, apricots, or figs if you prefer. For dried fruits, cut them into small pieces. Then cover them with warm water for at least 15 minutes to rehydrate them before adding them to the dough.
  • Add a dash of cinnamon and 1 cup of raisins, and omit the blueberries, for a delightful cinnamon raisin bagels.

If you need to store them for a longer period of time, it is best to keep them in the refrigerator or freezer.

To freeze them, place the cooled bagels in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1 to 2 hours. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.

When you are ready to eat the bagels, thaw out a frozen bagel overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature before reheating them it the air fryer.
